Derek Obialo was born in southeastern Nigeria to parents who were both public servants, and was raised with his five siblings. He learned early on the value of hard work, perseverance and compassion, and the importance of justice and equity in fashioning a safe, nurturing, and enduring society. He graduated from Government Secondary School, Owerri, the then Imo State University (now Abia State University), earning a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 1990, and the Nigeria Law School in 1991.

Mr. Obialo immigrated to the USA in 1994, residing in the Houston area. He worked as a construction claims consultant while earning his MBA from the Houston Baptist University. He graduated with Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Miami in 2007 and spent the next decade building a law practice litigating construction and business disputes in Harris and Fort Bend counties. He resides in Fort Bend County with his wife Dorothy and four children.
